Hon. Tim Hodgson

Member of Parliament for Markham-Thornhill

Tim Hodgson is the Member of Parliament for Markham–Thornhill and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. He brings experience in finance and public service to deliver real results for Canadians.

Tim Hodgson brings a wealth of experience in finance, public service, and leadership to his role as Member of Parliament for Markham–Thornhill and as Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

Born in Winnipeg and raised in a Canadian Armed Forces family, Tim grew up moving from coast to coast, gaining a deep appreciation for the country’s diversity and the values that connect Canadians. One of those formative stops was in Markham, a community he was proud to call home growing up. Today, Tim lives with his wife in the GTA where they raised their two daughters.

Tim’s early years were shaped by a strong sense of service. He served as a reserve officer in the Canadian Armed Forces while earning his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Manitoba. That experience inspired a lifelong commitment to supporting military families, including through his involvement with the True Patriot Love Foundation.

After completing his MBA at Western University’s Ivey Business School, Tim went on to a successful global career in finance. He spent two decades with Goldman Sachs in senior leadership roles across New York, London, Silicon Valley, and Toronto, eventually serving as CEO of Goldman Sachs Canada. He later served as a special adviser at the Bank of Canada, working alongside then-Governor Mark Carney to help navigate global economic uncertainty.

Tim has also contributed his expertise on several boards and regulatory bodies, including as Chair of Hydro One and the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization and on the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan board. He has supported innovation and entrepreneurship through his work with NEXT Canada and other technology and investment firms and has mentored young business leaders across the country.

As the MP for Markham-Thornhill, Tim brings a pragmatic, results-driven approach to leadership. Markham is one of the most diverse, dynamic, and innovative communities in the country. It’s a place that’s home to growing families, cutting-edge tech firms, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. His priorities reflect what he’s heard directly from residents: with the cost of groceries rising, and housing crisis worsening, Tim believes we need to do more to help people keep up and get ahead, and he’s committed to being a strong advocate in Ottawa for policies that address those realities.

He will also advocate for better transit and infrastructure so that residents can get to where they need to be faster and more efficiently and he looks forward to working across all levels of government and with law enforcement to keep this community safe.

Tim understands the priorities of Markham–Thornhill. Whether it’s supporting working families, tackling climate change, or building a competitive economy, Tim believes the government should deliver results that matter in people’s everyday lives, and looks forward to bringing Markham-Thornhill’s voice to Ottawa.
